"You shall love your crooked neighbor with your crooked heart" - Auden
Samantha Urena grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, but has found her home in the city of Isla Vista. She is now a fourth year English major at UC Santa Barbara. She cares deeply about literature. For her, literature is a way of seeing. It’s a way of understanding herself and a way of caring for those around her. Books become tools for the sake of empathy.
Her academic papers are usually focused around making cases for compassion - about the lack of it and about the deep need for it. She is interested in what “home" means to the individual and how its meaning affects the ways people navigate their lives. As mentioned before, she has found her home in Isla Vista as well as a community on campus called Cru and ultimately, she has found her home in Jesus.
Sam’s favorite things are puns, theology, friendship, and ice cream.
